Prison Social Care Services – HMP Bristol
At Eleanor Healthcare Group, we are proud to provide dedicated adult social care services at HMP Bristol. Our care is rooted in trauma-informed principles, ensuring support is respectful, person-centred and tailored to individual needs.
Service Objectives
Our care service at HMP Bristol works alongside existing health and prison services to provide flexible, person-centred support. Our specific objectives are to:
- Enhance the quality of life for individuals with eligible adult social care needs
- Promote well-being and support independent living, including safe manual handling and fall prevention
- Contribute to individual Care and Support Plans
- Identify and address gaps in current prison social care provision
- Offer practical solutions (including aids and assistive equipment) based on identified needs
- Provide earlier-stage interventions to reduce or delay the need for clinical care
- Ensure a consistently positive care experience for individuals in custody
- Work collaboratively with prison teams and external professionals in a coordinated way
- Deliver care in line with trauma-informed principles
Support Provided by Our Care Team at HMP Bristol
Our team of trained care workers carry out the following tasks on-site at HMP Bristol:
- Assistance, encouragement and prompts to get up or go to be
- Transfers to/from bed, chair, toilet
- Washing, bathing (including equipment use where needed), shaving assistance and hair care
- Oral and denture care, hand and fingernail care
- Foot care (excluding tasks requiring a podiatrist)
- Dressing and undressing assistance
- Toileting support, including cleaning, waste disposal and commode management
- Skin care (e.g. moisturising very dry skin)
- Prompting or safe administration of prescribed medication, following agreed protocols
- Assistance with visual and hearing aids (e.g. glasses cleaning, hearing aid battery checks)
- Encouragement and support with healthy eating
- Assistance with food and drink preparation
- Support with the use of assistive devices
- Identification of appropriate aids to improve daily functioning
- Advice, support and encouragement to build self-care skills
- Promoting of confidence and independence in daily routines
Our service is delivered in close coordination with:
- Prison custodial staff
- On-site NHS healthcare teams
- Social workers and care coordinators
- Other relevant professionals within the prison environment
This integrated approach ensures social care is embedded within the wider support system at HMP Bristol, providing a consistent and coordinated experience for those receiving care.
All care delivered by Eleanor at HMP Bristol is grounded in a trauma-informed model. Our care workers are trained to:
- Recognise signs of trauma
- Respond in a way that avoids re-traumatisation
- Prioritise safety, trust and empowerment in all interactions
