At Appleton Lodge Nursing Home, part of Eleanor Healthcare Group, we recently celebrated an incredible milestone, the 100th birthday of Violet Clarke, one of our most cherished residents.
Born in Sharrington, Norfolk in 1925, Violet reached her centenary on 15 March 2025 and we marked the occasion with a joyful celebration at our nursing home in Aylesford, surrounded by friends, family and fellow residents.
Violet’s life has been filled with remarkable achievements. During World War II, she served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) alongside Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, making parts for tanks and armoured vehicles. In a wonderful full-circle moment, Violet met the Queen again in 2019 at the official opening of Appleton Lodge, where they shared memories of their time in service.
“She had a very good memory,” Violet recalled. “She was a very kind and gentle lady.”
After the war, Violet earned a diploma in Oxford and pursued a career in social work, supporting vulnerable children, a role that even led her to work in Philadelphia, USA.
She was also an active member of the Salvation Army, a soloist singer and trombone player in its band. Her creativity shines through in her stunning wood carvings, stained glass paintings and artistic expression pieces. Well-travelled and full of stories, Violet has visited countries such as Canada and continues to inspire us all.
Violet’s birthday celebration at Appleton Lodge Nursing Home was filled with love and laughter. The Energize Choir performed a lively set of classics including Let’s Twist Again, When You’re Smiling, Bring Me Sunshine and Happy Birthday. Around 30 guests joined the celebration and Violet received a special birthday card from King Charles III.
“I’ve been fortunate to lead such a good life. I don’t drink or smoke and have always tried to stay healthy,” she shared when asked about the secret to her longevity.
Violet remains an active part of life at Appleton Lodge, taking part in activities and enjoying time with her lifelong friend, Francis, who also resides at the home.
“It’s a marvellous place,” Violet said. “The staff are very kind and attentive.”
“Violet is a much-loved member of our community here at Appleton Lodge,” said Cara Randall, Registered Manager. “She is very proud of being one of our oldest members and we love having her here.”
Fellow resident Doris added: “Violet is easy to get along with. We struck up a good friendship almost straight away.”
At Eleanor Healthcare Group, we are privileged to support and celebrate the lives of many centenarians across our care homes. For us, it’s not just about providing care — it’s about preserving dignity, cherishing memories and creating meaningful moments every single day!
Despite a successful stint as one of the youngest finance directors in London, specialising in mergers and acquisitions for a prominent advertising company, Marc found his professional success to be hollow. Driven by a desire to serve the community, he left the lucrative world of finance to establish an accountancy practice and business consultancy in Lewisham. His mission was clear: guide local start-ups and small businesses toward financial transparency and profitability.
As Marc’s consultancy flourished, he received a crucial call from Eleanor in 2005, who was struggling to keep her nursing agency afloat after 26 years. Marc took on the challenge, initiating a leap of faith that marked the beginning of a transformative journey. Today, the Eleanor Healthcare Group stands as a model business in the care sector, with over 1500 dedicated members, fluent in 112 languages, supporting over 3000 clients. The senior staff, with a combined experience of over 100 years in health and social care, has been instrumental in guiding and participating in the organisation’s remarkable growth.
Marc draws inspiration from his team of staff care workers and frontline keyworkers, acknowledging their role in preserving the life and dignity of the most vulnerable in the community. He emphasises that Eleanor is an organization with people at its core, having created a paradigm shift in the care sector with the driving principle that social care is about people, not processes. In 2009, Marc introduced the concept of person-centric care, responding to a request from Richmond Council. Eleanor Healthcare Group led the transformation, offering tailor-made services and pioneering an outcomes-based approach in collaboration with local authorities. The organisation then took a leading role in preventive care, integrating health and social care services and introducing a novel caring model to Lewisham Council based on the Buurtzorg model.
Despite numerous achievements, Marc sees success as just the beginning. The Eleanor family remains ready to take another leap of faith, with trust in people above processes. In the face of mounting challenges to health and social care systems, Marc has been steering Eleanor to the forefront of much-needed innovation within the UK and globally. Eleanor Healthcare Group takes pride in its identity, never compromising integrity and always preserving its true essence. The commitment to taking the road less travelled is evident as it approaches the next fork in the future of healthcare, promising to continue breaking new ground and redefine possibilities.
